The Start is What Stops Most People

I'm thrilled that so many new faces have joined the Art of Authorship Facebook group.  If you would like an inspiring group of writers and authors to mastermind with who will support you and help you remain accountable to your goals, you can join us here.

I want to also congratulate all of you who made the decision to participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) during the month of November.

I am posting my TOTD (Thought of The Day) LIVE in the Facebook group to encourage our writers to continue.  So often, we know deep down that we want to start something new, develop a new habit, but our "paradigm" or belief system controls our behavior.  Our old habits of not doing, of remaining comfortable, take over and, we never start the very thing we know we want to do. That is why there is such power in a mastermind, like a Facebook group or the NaNoWriMo initiative, to not just get started, but to KEEP us moving forward.

The start is what stops most people.

We have a voice in our head that reminds us that to do more, we have made a change, and change is not something most people enthusiastically embrace. We know changing our thinking and our habitual behavior is the key to leveling up to our next level of achievement, but that also requires a little bit of discomfort. We are programmed for comfort, and we resist change.

Does this apply to writing a book? Absolutely.  Writing a book is an activity that transfers our inspired ideas from our head to the page.  But before we write, we must become...an author. Incorporating any new habit takes discipline and a keen desire for an outcome or result more significant than what you have now. In all goal achievement, we are asked to give up something of a lesser value for something of greater value.

Becoming an author asks us to think as a new version of ourselves; as a leader, an authority.  What if you don't believe you ARE a leader? What if you don't think anyone would care about your book? What if you feel that you can't finish your book, because in the past you've never completed what you've started? We have a million excuses and alibis - but here's the thing...once you begin, once you take that first step forward and FEEL how good it feels to give yourself a command and follow it, you will want to feel that good feeling again and again.

The start is what stops most people.

Jeff Hilimire writes in his blog Begin the Begin:

"This is a public service announcement to do that thing you want to do. You know, that thing you think about all the time. That thing that you believe you should be doing, if you only had the time…or the money…or the experience…or the confidence.

Begin the Begin!

What I like about the phrase is that it's a call to action.  It applies to startups and entrepreneurs. It applies to marketers. It applies to people who want to help others. It applies to anyone that believes they can be something better but is hesitant to take that next step. Begin the begin, people!

Most people can’t get past the start. It’s the hardest part.  No more waiting. Map it out, and then do it. Whatever it is. Just…go!"

What's at the other end of the start? Victory. Achievement. There is a whole lot of inspired action and keen focus that goes on in the getting to the goal, but the very best way to keep yourself on track is to feel the feelings of the wish fulfilled. What does it feel like when you've climbed the mountain? How you feel about yourself when you make a committed decision to do something new  - realize you will likely have to make a few changes to get there and be disciplined enough to "give yourself a command and follow it.' - Bob Proctor's definition of discipline.

Don't just take MY word for it.  Today is Day 6 today of NaNoWriMo  (see below).  Here are just some of the writers and aspiring authors in the Art of Authorship Facebook Group helping one another get to that November 30th, 50,000-word target. These writers decided to be FEARLESS...and START!

 What is NaNoWriMo?

"National Novel Writing Month began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. Now, each year on November 1st, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel. You may know this mass creative explosion by the name National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo—but that's not all that NaNoWriMo is!"
