For more than 20 years, my communication company represented businesses, artists, theatre companies, and non-profit organizations and helped them gain attention from various media in order to promote their businesses, product launches, theatre productions, and gala events.  In my role as publicist, I invested in personal relationships with the members of the media (necessary), and these media professionals shared their frustration with me time and time again, about the quality of the information they receive in the form of poorly organized presentation, poor grammar, lacking coherence  and clarity.

Much of my consulting in those years was to advise on simple and common (not so common) sense ways to avoid what is a major setback before you even begin. It is a stumbling block that can be easily avoided.

Back then, social media was in its infancy, whereas now it is second-by-second commonplace. We used promotional material, purchased advertising and shook a LOT of hands.  Now, when you're seeking attention and reaching out to share your artistry or brand, you're sharing it with more than just press and media. But one thing remains constant: Wherever your information lands, because You Are Your Brand, your content quality and how you present yourself in your promotional material, must be first class.  Every time.  This is something that can make or break your business. 

Now, more than ever before, self-promotion demands mastery as a strategy, not a hit-and-miss concept.

1). Clarity and Excellence

Provide clearly laid out information about yourself that exemplifies excellence.  In a sea of requests, only those survive.  Ensure that the manner in which you communicate and convey your message is without presumption or entitlement and conveyed in a humble manner. 

You must entice the reader by telling them precisely what you want them to know. This in fact, is very empowering; that is of course, if you are equipped with the right tools at the ready to communicate on your own behalf at a moment’s notice. Press Kits and not just for press anymore.  

The following are key factors to keep in mind, and what’s widely expected of anyone reaching out for coverage in our global competitive market. You must possess some, if not all of the following qualities:

  • Unique
  • Articulate
  • Professional
  • Inspiring
  • Polished
  • Polite
  • Grateful
  • Trustworthy
  • Thorough
  • Accurate
  • Comprehensive
  • Noteworthy
  • Available
  • Honest

2. Presumption and Entitlement

You must never presume you are entitled to coverage.  Self-promotion begins with the understanding that your future audience you are seeking to impress are as busy (or busier) than you are.  Media in particular are sent thousands of requests like yours every day. The manner in which you communicate to them is the key to mastery.  

3. Build Relationships and Trust

Keep in mind that as you introduce yourself, your book, your brand in the early stages, it will not be the last time you seek coverage.  Think of the bigger picture. It is in the best interest of everyone that you pursue ALL coverage with a mindset of relationship-building and not a one-off request. This is where the issue of trust becomes of paramount importance.  Demanding you be noticed will never deliver results, but building rapport, trust, loyalty and appreciation for your audience and their time, will reap dividends that will benefit you both for years to come.
